How do upper cervical doctors tell their patients that, "Holding is healing?"

Socialized Medicine & BJ Palmer

There is so much talk about “Socialized Medicine” that we all think this is a new idea. Make sure you read ALL of BJ’s response which I’ve attached on the subject as you will see he was light years ahead of everyone else. Here is a snippet from BJ’s Fight to Climb:

Question 161. How will passage of the proposed socialized medicine bill before Congress affect Chiropractors?

Answer 161. Doctors and patients will become machines to be ground out like sausage links. Individual initiative will not exist. People will line up like people going to a movie, waiting to buy a chance at getting a series of forms to be filled in. D.C. will spend time signing forms galore….No matter how many corners everybody is compelled to twist around, patient pays, and pays, and pays, and in long run pays more under government supervision than he would if he paid direct.

I thank Dr. Kevin Leach of San Marino and Dr. Joey Miles for researching and forwarding this info to me.

Bogus Chiropractic Medicare Fraud

In case you think “more government is good government” have you heard of RAC? RAC stands for “Recovery Audit Contractors.” These are contractors hired by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to audit and recover dollars to put back into the Medicare Trust Fund. They have a huge incentive as they are paid on contingency (what they recover) on a percentage basis.California, Florida, New York, Massachusetts, South Carolina and Arizona were the states chosen to pilot the RAC program – resulting in over $900 million in overpayments being returned to Medicare over the course of three years, as well as $38 million in underpayments. Under the demonstration program, the RACS were able to recover 95% of the claims they audited. (The whole concept of Medicare fraud in chiropractic is so bogus. These patients have to go somewhere to deal with their health issues. Should it be inexpensive chiropractic which can get you well and KEEP you well OR should it be costly (check out the prices of pills, surgery,…) medical care which is currently bankrupting the system?)

Swine Flu Hoax

Wanna see a brief 60 Minutes expose on the Swine Flu. They review the hoax that took place in the early 70′s and the very nasty neurological sequellae resulting in paralyzed muscles and costing the government (that’s us!) billions not only for the drugs but to pay the bills for those who were injured. Watch http://wideeyecinema.com/?p=3352 Now if you don’t think this Swine Flu issue is important, read this: Arkansas State Health Department: Mandatory Vaccines Are Constitutional A member of the public who was concerned about a mandatory mass vaccination program in light of the swine flu pandemic called the Arkansas State Health Department for advice only to be told that mandatory vaccines were constitutional and could be enforced at gunpoint by the government if necessary.Legal council tells concerned caller that American citizens must accept enforced shot in event of mass swine flu vaccination program. During the phone conversation, the legal council discusses the potential of a future mandatory swine flu vaccination program and states, “That’s constitutional, there’s no doubt about it….mandatory vaccinations are legal under the Supreme Court….absolutely.”

The caller responds, “I’m an American and I have a legal right to make my own decision whether or not someone sticks a needle in me,” to which the legal council responds, “That’s not true….no.”

Upper Cervical Associate(s) Wanted

Dr. Nancy Gronewold took our Blair classes many times at Palmer. (She kept falling asleep when I spoke so it took a few sessions for it to sink in!) Anyway she is looking for an associate or two for her 2,300 sq. ft. UC office in Iowa City. You can contact Nancy at wellspingchiropractic@gmail.com The University of Iowa Medical School has a great reputation and this could be an opportunity to educate the uneducated! Nancy did a spinal screening last week and one of the participants is a urologist at the University and the not-so-timid Dr. Gronewold said “We WILL be having lunch!!!”

Blair Advanced Seminar

Speaking of very confident and centered UC docs, Dr. Susan Hooper, PhD, D.C. will be hosting a Blair Advanced seminar in her Marietta, GA office July 25,26. You can register by contacting Dr. Hooper at sahooper@oakbridgechiropractic.com On the same subject, I would really like to implore all docs and students to sign up for the Palmer Blair seminar series which will be starting August 1-2. You only have one week to sign up as the cut-off date is July 13…no extension. You will not only get an excellent overview of the Blair technique but also learn to mark regular Blair views and digital Blairs. You do not have to be a Palmer student to attend! The Palmer Blair series is scheduled for Aug. 1,2 for the Primary, Sept. 5,6 for Intermediate, and Oct. 9,10 for the Advanced. You can contact Mindy or Bridgett at 563-884-5647 to register. Dr. Todd Hubbard is giving a Blair Advanced seminar at Dr. Mike Thompson’s Fort Worth, TX office the weekend of July 18,19 (with 16 CE credits!), so we expect him to be wearing a Stetson and teaching torque by showing rope tricks by the time the Palmer series starts!!!

How Do You Tell Your Patients, “Holding is Healing?”

Billy Doherty, the creative genius at UCHCA, was asking doctors how they present the idea that holding is healing. In other words, what do you tell a patient when they DON’T need an adjustment. You probably heard at the BJ clinic some of the patients would cry when they found out they were out of alignment, feeling the let the doctor down and the healing stopped. (My patients, of course, cry for a different reason!) Anyway, the always wild and crazy Dr. Eddie Weller responded in a very succinct manner and I hope you check out www.lumivid.com/dreddie to learn a very efficient way of answering a very complex question!!!

Caught Red-Handed – Not EEVEN Remorseful

The crime rate in Pleasanton has skyrocketed and, as you will see from my security camera pic (at the top of this article), we caught some nefarious culprit trying to egg my office….all because I don’t have a knee chest table in my adjusting room!!!

Upper Cervical Associates Mourned

Just a little practice tip for you young docs out there. Those of you who are old fashioned and don’t have digital x-rays (like me) have to process the x-rays. When Dr. Cox (my associate) mentioned to me this morning that my wife had just scrubbed the dark room floor down with ammonia, he asked “When I first stared with you, you told me that the ammonia mixes with the developing chemicals and produces cyanide gas, similar to what they use in the gas chamber. Should I be worried?” Being the caring guy that I am, I mentioned. “No don’t worry, if you keel over, Dr. Hollowell will cover for you!!!”

Before you start feeling sorry for my associates, I did teach them how to perform the Ely test a special way in which the patient’s wallet gently slides out of their back pocket undetected, so don’t say I didn’t teach them anything!!!

Upper Cervical Testimonials

Dr. Drew Hall has been keeping me informed regarding all the great UC recoveries they are seeing in his LA office. Here is the latest:30 year old male diagnosed chronic fatigue syndrome, 12-14 hours of sleep a night which is unrestored, wakes up in am feeling like crap and never feels rested. He is pale & has a pasty appearance. He can’t work or do daily activities, so you can imagine his self esteem and feelings of being productive are at an all time low! He has been to five chiros and really didn’t notice any improvements. He has seem many MD’s (More Drugs, More Deaths!) Acupuncture, nutrition therapy, etc etc etc were ineffective.

Adjusted ASR (right transverse contact) atlas and he came back four days later with HOPE. First morning woke up feeling restored for the first time in three years! Even thought I warned him that most new patients are absolutely exhausted following their first correction, his energy over the first four days has been better than in the past three years. His mom is now in the book and his family, who owns a bakery, is spreading the wonders UC care to the San Pedro community.

And YET THERE ARE PEOPLE IN OUR PROFESSION whose minds are so small they want to relegate us to pain specialists!!! As I have always said, “If you are too damn incompetent in getting the sick well through an ATLAS correction,… get better or go do something else! DO NOT TRY TO CHANGE something that works when applied properly , honestly, and with the right INTENTION! (I just wish this mild mannered UC doc would learn to express his feelings!!!)

Thought I’d update you on a case that started with us a month ago. You may recall I’d mentioned that a young widow brought in her three year old. The posterior arch is rammed against the occiput. This child cried one straight year! Presently he has optic nerve hypoplasia (he is legally blind and cannot see anything beyond five feet), epilepsy (100 eye blinks/hour and fist clenching and leg extensions with each seizure), cannot talk, cannot walk due to extreme balance problems. He is continually fussy and must be entertained with noisy stuffed animals or he cries and has tantrums. His atlas has been adjusted twice in a month. Last Friday his mom announced that he can now see above the horizon with clarity. He is happy and not crying continually, but still is easily provoked. He sleeps better. He can now take a step but once he realizes that he no longer is being supported by an object, fear sets in and he falls. (He is literally taking baby steps…at age three!)

Final Thoughts

If any of you can conjure up some excellent quotes, epigrams, or verses to go on the wall at Dr. Ian Bulow’s UCHCA office in Pittsburgh, why not contact him at ianbulowdc@gmail.com I did tell him about BJ’s book As A Man Thinketh which is filled with quotes and he appreciated that advice. He didn’t appreciate my favorite quote which is on a tombstone and it states SEE I TOLD YOU I WAS SICK!!!

BTW, I gave the wrong date for the start of the Life West Blair series that Dr. Hari Khalsa and I will be teaching. It will start next Wed., July 15th at 5:00 on campus. Sure glad we installed those electric stim units in the classroom seats..only way I can keep those students awake!!!

He is a full time member of the faculty at Life Chiropractic College West, serving as the Director of the Institute for Advanced Care in Chiropractic. He is a highly sought as a speaker, making numerous international appearances each year.

In this interview we discuss:

How he became a chiropractor

How he got introduced to upper cervical

How he went from failure to success in his first clinic in Costa Rica

How to market yourself using the power of the internet

What makes his “That Something” coaching program unique

And much more.

This is one of the meatiest interviews I’ve done, and you should really listen to it more than once, and take notes.

Dr. Drury is one of the founding directors of Upper Cervical Health Centers of America. He is a graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology and his Doctorate of Chiropractic.

Dr. Drury has completed 100 hours of certification through the Kale Upper Cervical Specific Network where he was also an instructor for many years. He was also a member of the Kale Upper Cervical Research Council, an organization that performed Upper Cervical research all over the world.

He has traveled the world teaching the benefits of Upper Cervical Care including several Chiropractic Schools, Upper Cervical seminars and two missionary trips to the former Soviet Union where he instructed Medical Doctors in the understanding and practice of Upper Cervical Chiropractic. Ten years ago, Dr. Drury founded and has successfully run one of the busiest Upper Cervical Clinics in the world in Charlotte, N.C.

In this interview we discuss:

How he was healed of an illness overnight from an upper cervical adjustment.

How his early practice experience was a real struggle.

How he developed the systems that led to the Upper Cervical Health Centers of America.

The Evolution Seminars.

The use of seated CT imaging in the upper cervical practice.

And much more.

Dr. Drury is a great guy, and I really hope you enjoy this interview.

Brandon is about to graduate from Parker in Texas, and I wanted to interview him because of his presence on the internet, particularly at his website http://theatlasoflife.com where he posts news, opinions and interviews of prominent upper cervical doctors and patients.

I didn’t even realize that he was still a student until rather recently which is a testament to how a presence on the web lends a kind of authority to you.

The internet can be an incredibly powerful tool to spread the message of upper cervical chiropractic care, and Brandon is doing a temendous job of doing just that.

The internet allows you to have your own publishing house, radio station, or television station, for very little cost, and it is being utilized more and more frequently as peoples first choice for information, and your patients and prospective patients are going to the internet to get information on upper cervical.

Chances are, if you aren’t posting relevant information on the web, people like Brandon are supplying your patients and prospective patients information about what upper cervical is, and how it can help them.

Little did I know how interesting Brandon’s journey has been. In this interview we discuss:

How he chose to become a chiropractor

How he was first exposed to upper cervical chiropractic

How he dropped out of chiropractic school with no plans of ever returning

How a vivid dream lead to him re-enrolling

Why he decided to start his website

And much more.

Brandon has a bright future ahead of him, and I hope you enjoy this interview.

<itunes:summary>Brandon is about to graduate from Parker in Texas, and I wanted to interview him because of his presence on the internet, particularly at his website http://theatlasoflife.com where he posts news, opinions and interviews of prominent upper cervical doctors and patients.

I didn't even realize that he was still a student until rather recently which is a testament to how a presence on the web lends a kind of authority to you.

Chances are, if you aren't posting relevant information on the web, people like Brandon are supplying your patients and prospective patients information about what upper cervical is, and how it can help them.

Little did I know how interesting Brandon's journey has been.

Anyone can put up a website, but getting found by the right person, the right way when they want to find you is the key to getting more patients from the internet.

Last week, I gave a presentation to the local chamber of commerce on how the web can be utilized to get more contacts (and business) from the web, without spending an extra dime, even if you don’t have a website.

It was a huge hit, so I conformed the presentation to fit you, the upper cervical doctor because I thought you might like to learn how you can get more patients from the web using the same ideas.

It’s called 5 Fun Ways To Get More Patients From The Web and you can see and hear the presentation by going to SlideShare, or just watch it below.

These are some fun ways to use the web, that work better if you have a website to send patients to, but still work to get more patients even if you don’t have a website (I explain it all in the slide presentation).

I hope you enjoy it, let me know what you think, and if there’s anything I can help you with, just let me know.

Upper Cervical Chiropractors to be using CT imaging.

Years ago, when I was practicing in Sarasota, FL, I came in contact with a neuromuscular dentist who was showing me around his office.

These dentists are specialists who are focused on cosmetics, but their work has much farther reaching capabilities in that their patients often see relief of migraines and breathing problems… all by changing the way the teeth come together.

Most of these dentists are trained at the Las Vegas Institute, and at one time, they were encouraged to seek out upper cervical doctors because it was determined that getting the atlas corrected greatly complemented the neuromuscular dental work they were performing on their patients.

So anyway, this dentist was showing me his office, and he showed me an amazing piece of equipment.

It was a Mini CT scanner that took up about 6 square feet of office space, had a chin rest, and head clamps.

One press of a button, and you get a full 3D image of the patients head and cervical area.

The pictures were unbelievable, and the software looked very similar to the upper cervical analyzing software that was just coming out for digital xray.

I couldn’t believe that upper cervical doctors weren’t all over this, but no upper cervical doctor I talked to had heard anything about it.

I tried to get doctors and even a well known upper cervical imaging rep interested in this instrument, but no one seemed to care.

Well then, this week, Dr. Tom Forest’s weekly email had this blurb from Dr. Ray Drury of the Upper Cervical Health Centers:

The talk was great. We had three M.D. get up and say things in favor of UC that I never thought I would witness in my life time. One said that “As medical doctors they are excellent at giving a patient a diagnosis but maybe they weren’t so good at getting their patients well. That UC seems to do a better job of helping patients get well and that they need to embrace this “new” technology and work with the UC docs in order to help more people.” The head MD told the story of an MD in the 1880′s that stood up against his own profession and pointed out a mistake that was commonly made by MD’s in the delivery of babies that caused the babies and often the mothers to die. He was ridiculed by his profession, his license taken away and he was committed to an insane asylum where he later died. He said this cannot happen again. He acknowledged that this was like declaring war on his own profession. But, if the patient’s better interest was the most important, then they have to acknowledge that UC is better at helping people get well of a wide variety of conditions than medicine. He also stated that Dr. Drury had taught him things about the body and the nerve system that he did not know. Such as the body could heal itself naturally as long as the brain stem and the nerve system was clear of interference. Pretty incredible coming from a highly decorated MD.

He and I are partnering up to open the first UCHC of Italy in Rome. It should be open in February. We are going to use the seated 3-D CAT scan on our patients and he wants to start with an MS research project. This research project will start in San Marino and we’ll continue it in the Rome office. His name along with another MD and the UC docs participating in the study will be on the study. He expects this to be published in medical journals all over the Europe (maybe in the US as well.) He is also a board member of the most prestigious medical school in Europe. All pretty unbelievable stuff!

Finally, it looks like upper cervical care is entering a new frontier.

I hope to interview Dr. Drury soon and ask him about the CT scan.

Why should your patients choose you as their doctor instead of the other chiropractor down the street?

What is a U.S.P. & why is it important

If you don’t know why you’re in practice, then your patients certainly don’t know, and if they
don’t know, then they are just going to go with their cheapest option.

Advertising that you’re the cheapest is not really a good idea because someone can always go
lower, no matter how low you go.

A Unique Selling Proposition is essential for an upper cervical practice so that it knows exactly
why people should do business with them.

A Unique Selling Proposition, or U.S.P. is a statement, in 90 words or less, that answers the
question: “Why should I do business with you versus any and every other option available to
me… including doing nothing.”

It is your “elevator speech.” If you’re ever in an elevator, and someone asks you what you do,
it’s the speech you give them.

When you can answer this question in a succinct manner, then you have your practice’s U.S.P.

This is vitally important and is the foundation for all of your communication efforts with your
patients.

If you can’t succinctly state why you’re different, and why your patients should choose you as
their doctor, then you won’t be able to tell your patients succinctly why you’re different and
why they should choose you as their doctor.

If you can’t tell your patients, then they won’t be able to tell anyone else why you’re different,
and why other people they’re trying to refer should choose you as their doctor.

Don’t discount this step. This seems simple and straightforward, and it is. A USP is a very
simple thing, but simplicity of object does not mean that it is easy to develop.

7 principles of Shrewd Upper Cervical marketing.

There are many, many different types of chiropractic practices.

Full Spine, Gonstead, Activator, Nucca, Atlas Orthogonal,…

On and on the list goes, but for all of the differences that make these practices unique, there is one undeniable truth about these and all practices:

A practice, is a business, & fundamentally, all business is the same.

All business is merely an exchange of goods or services for an agreed upon medium of equiva-
lent value.

Whether your a chiropractor, a plumber or a fast food franchise owner, people do business with you for the same reason they do business with any and all other businesses. Those reasons do vary, be they cost, product, service, convenience, but fundamentally, all business is the same.

In fact, the biggest mistake that any practice makes, is assuming that it’s different from any
other business.

This one mistake causes all practices that make it (the mistake), to ignore means and methods for improving their performance simply because no one else in their industry is doing it.

Practice owners look to see how everyone else in the chiropractic industry does things, and then proceed to model what they do based on what they see, and all they succeed in doing is making themselves look like a commodity.

This leads to marketing incest, and eventually the practice gets lost in the heap created by all the other practices all doing what everyone else is doing.

Just pick up any Yellow Pages, go to the section on chiropractors, and see what I mean. How many ads in that section are saying anything different from any other ad there?

But there is a much better way to run your practice.

There is a way to set yourself apart from the pack, become the lead dog and leave all of your competitors staring at your backside as you run away with all of their business.

And this essentially boils down to a more effective marketing plan accomplished applying as little as 7 principles to your upper cervical practice, and not requiring you to spend any more money on advertising, but simply leveraging existing assets that you may have never thought of.

The 7 principles are:

1. Developing an easily understood statement that makes you distinctive from other chiropractors (also known as an upper cervical Unique Selling Proposition (U.S.P.)).
2. Integrating your upper cervical U.S.P. into every piece of media that leaves your practice (including what your CA says on the phone).
3. Collecting present & past patients into a database.
4. Communicating your upper cervical USP to current and past patients.
5. Developing a practice newsletter.
6. Collecting letters of endorsement and testimonials.
7. Properly communicating with prospective patients.

Dr. Forest is a 1974 graduate of Palmer College, and has been a practicing upper cervical doctor for over 30 years.

When he was still a young doctor, he was introduced to the Blair technique, and is now a certified instructor.

He has spoken at Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa, and Life University in Marietta, GA.

He is the son of a chiropractor, and has two brothers who are upper cervical chiropractors.

Dr. Forest was also featured in the upper cervical documentary film, The Power of Upper Cervical.

In this interview he discusses:

The history of the Blair technique

The importance of unification of the upper cervical techniques

What it takes to be “On Purpose”

This was a fun interview, it’s about 70 minutes long, divided into two parts.

In depth interview with Dr. Larry Allen.

Below is an interview with retired upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Larry Allen.

Dr. Allen is 89 years old, and an upper cervical living legend.

At 12 years of age Dr. Allen had an accident that left him paralyzed for almost 2 and a half years.

He was literally found by Dr. John Grostic, who adjusted his atlas, and within seconds he had feeling in his legs, and in a short while had enough strength to walk.

He decided right then that he wanted to become a chiropractor, and he went to Palmer, and graduated at 18 years of age.

In this interview, Dr. Allen shares with me:

His early days growing up in Michigan.

His paralysis and experience with Dr. Grostic.

His experience with BJ Palmer.

Some truly miraculous cases he was involved in.

Stories of presenting chiropractic to the United Nations.

The story of the origin of his industrial pre-screening program.

And he Even shares how he was The Original Culligan Man’s chiropractor.

Dr. Allen is truly a treasure, who has lived a lot of upper cervical chiropractic history, and I really enjoyed talking with him.

This interview is in two part, and is around 80 minutes long.

I hope you enjoy it.

Life Chiropractic College West has announced the addition of Charles Woodfield, DC, RPh, as full-time research faculty. Woodfield’s has more than 25 years of research experience in healthcare service, and he was a major contributor to the recent widely publicized paper on hypertension.

Woodfield will propose new research at Life West, serve as a facilitator approaching funding sources, and help build stronger relations with the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) community. Future projects will include further collaboration with George Bakris, MD, of the University of Chicago in pursuit of the validation of the clinical processes and measures used to determine an Atlas misalignment.

Woodfield developed the hypertension study protocol and was a major contributor to the Journal of Human Hypertension publication of the results. Recent investigation has involved a case study in measuring changes of cerebral blood flow resulting from an Atlas correction using Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging Angiography (PC MRA).
