Dr. Drew Hall | Upper Cervical Interview
December 7, 2009 by drhambrick
Here is an interview I did with Dr. Drew Hall of Redondo Beach, California.
He is an upper cervical evangelist and dedicated practitioner of the Blair technique, and when he’s not correcting patient’s atlas subluxations, he’s the president of the blair society.
In this interview he tells the story of how:
- He was was introduced to upper cervical
- How an epiphany during a walk home led to him enrolling in chiropractic school
- About his early days in practice
- A few case studies
- And more.
I hope you enjoy this interview.
I made a few changes to how I conduct these interviews starting with this one with Dr. Hall.
First of all, I conducted the entire interview via Skype which is a voice over internet protocol program. This resulted in a much clearer and even recording which cut down on editing time and allowed me to deliver to you a better, final product quicker than normal.
Second, because I now use the computer and the web for the whole process, it allows me to actually broadcast the conducting of the interview live, complete with video.
If you would like to see the video of me interviewing Dr. Hall, you can either see it on the front page of the blog (http://www.uppercervicaldocs.com) under the “Featured Upper Cervical Interview” section, or you can go to http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/2683135 to see the recorded video.
I did not announce the live broadcast this time because I wanted to have a chance to iron out any mistakes before I had a huge audience. Believe it or not, there were absolutely no mistakes whatsoever, and everything went off without a single hitch – no software problems, no video problems, no bandwidth problems – nothing.
So the next time I conduct an interview, I will be sure to give you advanced notice so you can tune in and watch the interview live if you want to.
The place to see future interviews live will be http://www.ustream.tv/channel/uppercervicaldocs.
I’ve also produced the interview more like a standard podcast, and stopped dividing up the recordings into parts. Now the whole interview is in one single mp3 file.
This makes it much easier to subscribe to the podcast feed and synching up your mp3 player.
I’ve also, after much wailing and gnashing of teeth, cleaned up the feed so that you can easily subscribe to the interviews via iTunes, and synch your iPod, iPhone or other mp3 player to the podcast section of the iTunes store.
You can get to iTunes podcast by clicking on this link: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=344773151.
I am now in the process of cleaning up past interviews to make them one single file and the blog, and iTunes should reflect that as I am able to make it happen.
The official RSS feed for the interviews can be found at http://feeds.feedburner.com/upper-cervical-interviews if you would rather subscribe in another type of reader.
Of course you will still be able to listen, and download the interviews directly from the website http://www.uppercervicaldocs.com/.
Be on the lookout in the very near future for more regular upper cervical podcasts that are more than just interviews.
Lastly, I want to thank you for your support and encouragement as I’ve traveled down this path… I truly enjoy doing this and hope that you enjoy listening, just as much.

Upper Cervical Interview | Dr. James Tomasi | Upper Cervical Advocate

In 1997, James was making final plans to take his own life after suffering with excruciating pain from trigeminal neuralgia for over 10 years.
His wife heard a radio program about upper cervical care and convinced him to go see the upper cervical doctor in their town.
Needless to say, that visit changed his life, and ended his plans to commit suicide.
Now Dr. Tomasi lives his life making people aware of upper cervical care across the nation by doing public service lectures, TV and Radio appearances, as well as speaking in many churches, colleges and clinics.
He has written several books along with his wife, Rhonda, and one book, What Time Tuesday chronicles his personal story of suffering with trigeminal neuralgia and his recovery under upper cervical care.
This interview is about an hour long, in two parts, and I hope you enjoy it.

Health Care Reform & Upper Cervical Docs

Great things happening in Upper Cervical. It is always interesting to find out what caused the patient’s most recent atlas subluxation. Last week a patient reported to me that on a very hot night with the screened window open, she started sleepwalking and walked out the window, face first onto the redwood deck. So reminded me of those Friday nights at college!!!
Last week I mentioned that Dr. Jeff Gilbert of Des Moines, IA needed a side posture table and Blair headclamps but didn’t include his contact info. Here it is: 515-971-4161 drjeff@gilbertwellness.com
He also wrote me:
“Just got back from a great morning spent with Dr.John Hilpisch. See you next weekend.” If they went to lunch together, you’d better believe John got alligator arms once that check was placed on the table!!!
What he meant by see you next weekend is the Blair Primary Dr. Todd Hubbard Todd.Hubbard@palmer.edu and I are giving on campus this Sat. Hope you can be there and, considering the August Iowa weather, you should be able to exercise those pores rather vigorously!!!
Probably the biggest complaint we hear is, “Where it the UC research?” Here is what is happening on the Palmer Iowa campus according to Dr. Hubbard:
Palmer College is currently recruiting patients for their Blair Upper Cervical care on fibromyalgia patients. This is a feasibility study looking at the outcome of care on patients receiving Blair care verses a sham cervical adjustment.
Dr. Todd Hubbard is waiting to hear any minute if his pediatric cyclic vomiting case report is accepted for publication in The journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. This is a case report of a 7 year old female whose cyclic vomiting episodes were stopped by using the Duff Neural Canal x-ray analysis. The Blair Chiropractic Society teaches the Duff x-ray analysis for pediatric patients.
Dr. Hubbard, Dr. Casey Crisp and Brett Vowels (student) are currently writing a case report on a female epileptic patient whose seizures has have stopped since her Blair care began. Just got this 5 minutes ago:
GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I talked to my graduate committee today. They are going to approve the change of topics for my research. I am now going to do an:
Inter and Intra reliability study on the Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic X-ray analysis protocol.
This is huge. Basically we will reproduce the Addington study and have it go through because it is my practicum. I will get guidance on writing the manuscript which will guarantee publication. Almost too good to be true.
The support we are getting from the students for UC continues to increase. Check out what Life Blair Club prez Lauren Milman has to say about life on campus:
Another round of a Blair Advanced has just wrapped up here in Marietta! This weekend both Sherman and Life students got together for another great Blair-unifying session! We all are on FIRE and can’t WAIT for the Conference in September! We have so many students currently interested in learning Blair that Dr. Susan Hooper will need to host ANOTHER Advanced course to accommodate the need in October (exact date TBA). We wanted to let all the UC docs around the country know that the UC buzz around the Life campus is continuing to grow. The Blair Club was invited to present our technique to the student body at the first ever Life Technique Night, along with other much MUCH larger clubs on campus (I would have expected them to push us back to Weeks 2 or 3, but the first night makes me excited!!) So the word is being spread.
On behalf of both Sherman and Life Blair Clubs, we look forward to seeing everyone in September!! (at the Atlanta Blair Conference…details www.blairchiropractic.com )
Another future doc super excited about Upper Cervical is Parker student Brandon Harshe and he has some equipment for sale:
- X-ray developer/processor- $500
- Full x-ray unit- includes tilting bucky, standard headclamps (not Blair) 3 viewboxes, free-standing lead shield, x-ray chair, 2 boxes of 14×17 film, cassettes… unit overall is pretty old, but still works fine… $5,000 for everything.
- 3 resting tables, 1 of which is a spinalator- $300
- Hylo Table- needs a little work- $1,000
- Posture Constant Chair- in perfect condition- $500
- DermaThermaGraph- includes box with paper… I have a second
- DermaThermaGraph, but 1 screw has been mutilated and I haven’t been able to remove to replace the paper… if you want it, it’s yours- $150
- 2 Rock Tables- 1 needs hydraulic oil (I think), the other needs the headpiece put back together- $400
Everything is in an air-conditioned storage unit in Fort Worth, TX. This equipment belonged to Sterling Pruitt, Jr for years. His wife sold it to me back in May. Like I said, I am moving away from DFW and will not be using any of this equipment. You will have to come pick it up if you buy it. You can email me atbrandon@theatlasoflife.com if interested. Make sure you check out his great UC site regardless!
While on the subject of UC things for sale, the dynamic Texas UC Orthospinologist Dr. Bart Patzer, tries to keep historic UC practices moving forward to serve lifelong UC patients after the DC passes on. Here are two to think about:
Practice for Sale
San Angelo, Texas
Continue a legacy (doctor retiring) in a beautiful historic building that was built as a chiropractic clinic in 1930. Successful upper cervical practice for sale or available for associateship –to purchase in the great city of San Angelo, TX. Abundance of trees, lakes and friendly hometown environment. Great place to raise a family. Must have experience in Grostic, Nucca, Orthospinonlogy, Atlas Orthoganal, or Blair. Train with one of the top upper cervical specific teams in the world and begin living your dream. Contact BJ Patzer at (512) 619-7267 or email resume to patzer1@flash.net.
Practice for Sale
Lubbock/Floydada , Texas
A legacy continues for this practice of 55 years. Most patients have been coming 30+ years and have always paid cash. The doctor has retired, but patients are still seen by 2 DC’s twice a month. This area was once home to the largest concentrated area of upper cervical doctors in the SW United States. This practice is the last one of those standing. The demand and awareness in this area is high and underserved. It’s always said “the people out here are great, and so friendly. Lubbock is has a large university and is a retail hub for the surrounding agriculture , ranching country. Must have Grostic, NUCCA, Orthospinology, Atlas Orthoganal training, or Blair. Call now for easy , immediate income and regular committed patients to BJ Patzer,DC 512.619.7267 or email at patzer1@flash.net
Dr. John Goodfellow, HIO doc from Chicago, wrote me: “I haven’t added anything to my website in a long long time, but I just uploaded a three page PDF on spinographic interpretation. www.drgoodfellow.com and click on Chiropractic Student. Perhaps this might be of some interest to your students.”
Dr. Patrick Newhouse forwarded an article which I’ve attached which is a “call to action” regarding a Federal Health Bill fundings for psych treatment. I am totally in favor of those in Washington having ANY mental health treatment available!!!
I think I’m being way to happy today, so why not a dose of reality. Dr. Roger Morrison forwarded an e-mail which I’ve attached (OUR FUTURE, OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE) which is a summary of the proposed National Health Care program. Our family was arguing this subject last night as my son-in-law from a country which has National Health Care swears the system can work and that it will mainly be for the impoverished and uninsured with the rest of the system intact. His concern is that unless insurance companies go ‘non-profit’, they can’t be regulated and rates can be set on a whim. Thus they serve the shareholders (maximize profits) vs. the patient (cut costs, cut quality care). He quoted a Texas study which showed 9% of insurance monies actually went to “health care” while the remainder went to “administrative fees”….i.e. CEO portfolios!!!
While on the subject of National Health Care, check out the site Dr. Mike Thompson sent me www.freeourhealthcare.com and you will discover a petition signed already by almost 1 million people aimed at minimizing government takeover of your health care rights. Check it out!
Dr.Bryan Duff, of the famous UC Duff family, is in need of an associate in his Northern California office. Here are his needs: I would greatly appreciate you posting an email that I am looking for 1-2 associates to train/share office SPACE ON OFF DAYS. T/TH/SAT+. for Novato [MARIN OFFICE] STRAIGHT U.C. only of course. You can contact him at BDUFF10203@hotmail.com I listed the wrong address last time I posted this….sorry—must have been subluxated!
Dr. Drew Hall has been seeing some amazing recoveries. Here are the latest:
Had a guy who is an immigration lawyer……..6 months ago he woke up with excruciating sciatica..it got to a point where the pain was so severe they hospitalized him and gave him some narcotic I had never heard of ………It damn near killed the guy. He had a horrible reaction and at one point his family was planning the funeral….. Well he came out of it and was left with a severe head tremor, hands shaking to the point that he was unable to write legibly and still had severe sciatica to the point where he can’t work. Well innate adjusted his atlas and he came back 4 days later with 80 percent reduction in pain. His head tremor was gone and he is pretty much a happy camper!
Forgot to tell you this one also………I have been taking care of this guy for three months……he came in with severe bi lateral leg neuropathy to the point he couldn’t walk for more than 3 minutes without sitting down…. Chronic constipation, allergies, low energy , insomnia etc etc etc He has had one adjustment and has cleared 90 percent of the symptoms….but here is the great part of the story…. he was on his brand new inversion table he bought off the Internet last week at a 70 percent angle the caribeaner broke and he landed upside down on his head/shoulder. I checked him 4 times and could find nothing………. and he wasn’t someone who was off 1/4 of an inch! he was off like 5/8 when he first came in ………..go figure!
So Dr. Fred Harkins called me the other day to tell me a story about a lady who has been under care for about 3 years! I think he said three years….. She has worn bi-focals for 20 years. Well in the past week or so all of a sudden her vision normalized! From what Fred told me they have records from the optometrist and of course that doc said that it was impossible what happened…..Fortunately Innate doesn’t hold the same opinion!!!
The Business of Upper Cervical

Last week I sent you a power point on all the pollution and waste from drinking and packaging bottled water. Alice Whaley, wife of that firebrand retired Chicago UC doc, Dr. John Whaley, wrote me the following: All water purification systems leave a great deal to be desired. Bacteria is one of many problems.
Lake Michigan use to have great water but now with fluoride added (a by-product of industry and
not the natural stuff), it is not good to drink. Also, fluoride is almost impossible to remove from
the water. Dr. Whaley did a radio show on fluoride about 50 years ago. The problems they knew
then are the same today. We get our water from a well (our daughter’s well). Before then, we
would pump our water from a well in the forest preserve.
Here is another Upper Cervical opportunity for an associate/partner:This is DocTOR Ian Bulow with UCHCA Pittsburgh and I am looking for a passionate UC warrior to join me in my mission to “Work with and through HIS design, to restore and maintain health in HIS creations!” If you know such a person, please have them contact me for an interview. Thank you!

Anyone have any extra UC equipment? Here is what Dr. Jeff Gilbert needs: I was wondering if you could mention in your upper cervical stuff that I am looking for a side posture table and Blair headclamps.

Dr. Rob Kessinger has an The Business of Upper Cervical management seminar open to all August 7,8 in Atlanta. Check out the attachment and decide if you can join this principled dynamo in Hotlanta!!!
Upper Cervical Health Centers (UCHC) are holding a seminar that very same weekend, Aug 7,8 in Charlotte, NC. The speakers will include Drs. Vaugniaux, Hilpisch, Drury, Conicello, and Patzer. The subject of the seminar is: GROW YOUR UPPER CERVICAL PRACTICE IN THIS ECONOMIC DOWNTURN. Dr. Hilpisch has promised not to make the arm pit noises he was so famous for while in college!!! (Here is a last minute notice, due to scheduling problems with the speakers, this seminar was rescheduled for Nov. 6,7!)
Dr. Ben Locklear of Mangum, OK forwarded an interesting message which I’ve attached regarding chiropractors being included in U.S. Public Health Service (we should be included but the Surgeon General put us on a back burner!) and forgiving portions of your student loans for serving in impoverished areas…interesting concept. It isn’t a realty yet but nice to know some people are actually using their intercranial tissue in Washington!!!
I probably wouldn’t be grossed out by a slasher movie nowadays as it would probably resemble my less than accurate skills in cadaveric dissection class while at Palmer! A TV show that does gross me out is a new once called Wipeout which shows people slamming their heads into various objects. (Apparently the Japanese version doesn’t allow the contestants to wear pads.) When you see the clips advertising the program you probably will have to turn your head as you start thinking of the physical and emotional illnesses that will occur as a result of this feeble attempt to “entertain!” While on the subject of entertainment, a patient of mine who is 69 and decided to embark on a career as a model/actress, told me yesterday she may have gotten a walk-on roll in a medical series they will be shooting in San Francisco. Her part would be that of a pedestrian who gets hit by a car. We agreed that as the camera pans in closer on her body, her hand will slowly open up showing her firmly grasping my business card!!!
Drs. Patrick and Jackie Newhouse opened their Blair Upper Cervical clinic in Moline, Ill. and they have been seeing dramatic recoveries:
Dr. Forest, here is a cool case. We had a guy come in 4 weeks ago who was somewhat skeptical. He reluctantly sat through my Doctor’s report, and decided it was time to do something about his health. He has had guillian Barre syndrome for the past 30 years and has been living in constant pain. He had trouble walking, trouble urinating and fatigued very easily. After his first adjustment he found he was able to urinate better. After several weeks of care he kept gradually getting better and better. One weekend, he was able to walk at the farmer’s Market in the humid Iowa weather for one entire hour without having to sit down.
Well the past two visits I have seen him, he said for the first time in 30 years he has been completely out of pain!!! Isn’t innate amazing!!!
I asked Patrick about his daughter who was born less than 4 lbs and he has a photo of her sitting in his cowboy boot. No truth to the rumor that the pic shows her plugging her nose! Here is the story:
The story of my daughter Morgan is an interesting one. We delivered her at home (Thank GOD!!) and she came out weighing 3 lbs 10 oz. She was not early either (38 weeks ). She had her power turned on right away, and was an amazingly healthy little princess. The midwife who helped us was somewhat nervous about her small size, and wanted to get a second opinion. I was against it, but reluctantly agreed to have someone give a second opinion to make sure everything was ok. So, on the day she was born we went to a DO in town to give a second opinion. This horse’s ass did the basic checks and then proceeded to tell us how we should have had her in the hospital where she should have been on antibiotics, under a heat lamp, and fed baby formula, etc. (because as you know God screwed up when he made breastmilk and thankfully we have wonderful companies like enfamil and others who make up for His shortcomings). In fact his recommendation was to start feeding her Enfamil!!
We obviously disregarded this clown’s advice and took her home. She ate very well and is as healthy as ever. We are so thankful every single day we knew the Principle and decided to have her at home!!! I shudder to think what would have happened to her if the church of medicine would have been able to get their clutches on her. She probably wouldn’t be here right now. I am not at home right now, but when I get home I will scan you the pictures of her when she was very little and some pictures now.
Dr. Dena King is a Life West grad who practices UC in Novato, CA and sent me the following:Just had to tell you this…I got an “Auntie” who came in and said: “if you can make me feel better, my niece (in her 40’s) will come in (she has MS, fibromyalgia, and a host of too many things to list….she’s had many accidents, 8 surgeries on her back, 2 surgeries on her eyes and “only wants to drive a car again”. She used to race cars.)
Well, “Auntie” said she (herself) has “Sjogrens” the autoimmune dx of dry eyes, mouth, etc (among other things) and numbness/ pain down both arms (particularly the right) and into her back.
After her second adjustment; that evening the “waterworks” in her left eye turned on and was running down her face the rest of the night. She couldn’t believe it and didn’t associate it w/ the adjustment until we talked the next visit. “Oh”; she said, I just remembered! (I’d showed she and her niece your article about “I forgot to remember” ;.) Thank you! (the numbness is gone and the pain 90% reduced! :>))
SO….now the niece is coming in and has been adjusted (first time C1 ASL-ASR and C2 ALS-ARS: – “WOW” I said to myself – “never seen this” I did each listing individually on C2 and the advanced listing for C1 (after studying the guide for what seemed a Looooong! time!…..the second time I just adjusted C1.) They both asked: “so you mean there is a reason I’m like this? The doctors haven’t done anything for me…I get MRI’s almost every six months…. Post 2nd adj. she said: “wow, that hurt so good!” and started laughing and couldn’t stop giggling. It was SOOooo cool Tom! (She hasn’t smiled at all since we met weeks ago.) Here is the latest on this case:PS: “Auntie” is off her 9800mg (yes you are reading that correctly) ibuprofen and is going off her meds for Sjogrens…we’ll see what happens. Her Thermography was in the “red” but her leg challenges/checks were totally clear…bizarre….I did NOT adjust her although I felt so nervous about it!
Dr. Drew Hall and Dr. Beth O’Rourke did a spinal screening at Raleigh Studios, a 22 acre movie studio in Manhattan Beach, CA. They are currently filming Iron Man II, CSI, and 90210 (and many other movies and TV series) at that lot. They got 8 signups and very positive feedback that these screenings could lead to bigger and better things coming out of Hollywood for Upper Cervical!!!
Our Palmer Blair series which was to start Aug.1,2 was cancelled at the last minute which is a bummer as we have been giving three series a year (9 seminars) since 1999 and this is only the third one that didn’t have enough sign-ups. Anyway, Dr. Hubbard and I decided to still do a primary workshop Sat. Aug. 1 as a number of doctors has non-refundable tickets. Todd said:I am setting this up for just one day, Saturday August 1st. We are
charging $50 for students and $200 for doctors. You can contact him for registration at Todd.Hubbard@palmer.edu.
Speaking of Dr. Hubbard, he informed us via our last Blair Conference call that there is a federal stimulus program you that may interest you. Here is what he wrote me:
Here is the website for DCs to learn about the $44,000 they can receive from Obama’s stimulus package. It is part of the National electronic health care records.
There is a 1 hour seminar explaining the entire thing.
http://www.cms.hhs.gov/PQRI/
Dr. Drew Hall sent me this note on the Blair conference to convey to UC students and docs regarding the Blair Conference:(see attachment)
BLAIR ANNUAL SEMINAR IN ATLANTA
GEORGIA SEPT. 18TH AND 19TH
Students and colleagues,
If you have not registered for the Blair annual in Atlanta please do so. To register go to www.regonline.com/blair2009. The event is going to be held at the BRAND new W Hotel. We have secured our keynote speaker, Kirk Eriksen fiery Upper Cervical Doctor, Researcher, and Leader within our ranks. Kirk will bring back the fire for why you have chosen to do what you do. Please come and support the Blair work by attending. There is great power in being around like minded individuals with a common purpose.
For the students; there are still a few free rooms left, but they are going quick. I would appreciate it if the students could spread the word at their schools. Can some of you please email me back that are interested in spreading the word? I will have a PDF file to print some flyers about the Conference that can be distributed here shortly. Thanks for your support.
WE WILL NOT BE DENIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK, to end things on a light note. Many of you docs back east think that we Californians are a little lax when it comes to disciplining our children. We are tough as nails. One of my daughter’s high school classmates is sternly restricted for bad grades, curfew offenses,… The parents take away her Range Rover….and make her drive the BMW!!!
Take care-

Upper Cervical Pie
July 6, 2009 by drhambrick
There are two kinds of people in the world:
- Those who think the ‘pie’ is only so big, and if you have a piece then that’s a piece that they don’t have, and so their goal is take as many pieces as they possibly can before the ‘pie’ is all gone.
- Those who think the size of the ‘pie’ has unlimited potential, and actually has more pieces than any one person could ever handle in a lifetime.
Those with the second attitude are always the most truly successful in life, business and otherwise.
For too long, much of chiropractic, and especially upper cervical chiropractic has been wrought with those of the first kinds of people, and this has really crippled our ability to make the difference in the world that we are capable of accomplishing.
Thankfully, things seem to be changing.
It seems that upper cervical as a whole is experiencing more & more solidarity as time goes by.
And this is good for our profession, for our niche, and ultimately for our patients, both existing and potential.
The internet is an invaluable platform for facilitating this movement.
Every day, I see more and more upper cervical related blog entries, news pieces, tweets & etc.
I’m writing this as an encouragement to all upper cervical doctors to just publish yourself.
Everything you put on the web that is related in some way to upper cervical chiropractic, whether it’s a blog entry, a website, a tweet on twitter, a Facebook profile, a video to YouTube, an article on eZine Articles, a slide show on Slide Share… whatever, it adds to the ongoing conversation and benefits us all.
Let’s keep this going and see just how big the ‘pie’ can be.
Remember The BIGNESS of Upper Cervical
June 29, 2009 by drhambrick
Elvis Presley once sung a song “I forgot to remember to forget” and to this day I’m still trying to figure out what that means! The reason I brought that up is that many UC docs who have been in practice 2, 3, 4 + decades forget about all the dramatic recoveries they’ve seen as the years go by. Last week I was discussing with a patient of mine, who is a psychologist, the unusual cases we’ve attracted over the past month. We have two infants under 7 months with seizure disorders; a three y/o who is legally blind, unable to walk; 24 y/o male with MS resulting in blindness…. and wanted her to understand the BIGNESS of Upper Cervical. She said, “You don’t need to convince me, I not longer have my migraines. But the thing that totally convinced me about Upper Cervical was the patient Diane _ _ _ _ that I sent in to you about three years ago. She had Lou Gehrig’s Disease and completely healed once her neck was corrected!” I forgot!!!
Did you ever think, if only the public knew what we knew, how could they ever think of not bringing their kids, spouse, parents,…in for UC care? Physically and emotionally you are such a different person when you are neurologically clear. Sadly we have presented such a confused message to the public that the word ‘chiropractic’ conjures up so many images that it confuses people and makes them not partake in this wonderful profession…so safe, so effective! Anyway, typical of public perception of our profession, cuts are coming:
Chiropractic Cut from Coverage
Alberta, Canada Albertans will no longer be able to claim chiropractic care starting this summer, after the government delisted chiropractor services from its provincial health plan. The cut will save approximately $53 billion per year.
Delisting chiropractic services seems to be the trend in Canada, with both British Columbia and Ontario making similar decisions in the recent past. It is anticipated that seniors and people with low incomes will cancel appointments.
The Edmonton Journal
“It is likely that the US will follow the same thinking regarding chiropractic services if national health care reform is instituted.” “That would save $176 million in medicare payments to chiropractors per year in the USA.”
British ad regulators pan subluxation-based
chiropractic claims.
Last October, the British Advertising Standards Authority (ASA)
ordered the Ideal Spine Centre in Blean, Canterbury to stop claiming
that a program of periodic spinal checkups throughout life would have
an impact on resistance to disease. [ASA Adjudication, Oct 15, 2008]
http://www.casewatch.org/foreign/asa/farthing/asa_2008(2).shtml The
clinic is run by Christian H. E. Farthing, an Australian-trained
chiropractor who began practicing in the United Kingdom in 2000.
http://www.idealspinecentre.co.uk/
During ASA’s proceedings, Matthew McCoy DC, Director of Life
University, Marietta, Georgia provided a review of “vertebral
subluxation” and its application within chiropractic. He also
referenced various trials that he said showed chiropractic and
subluxation had an impact on wellness and quality of
life.
Dr. Kevin Smith forwarded an e-mail from Dr. Joe Ierano that has the usual “wasting money on unproven methods” tripe but the bottom part of the e-mail has some very favorable statistics you may want to use to show that what we do is “AT LEAST” 50% less expensive. In this economy, that is HUGE!!!
Dr. Hubbard is being a busy man. He will be teaching a Blair Intermediate/Advanced seminar in Fort Worth, TX at Dr. Mike Thompson’s office. The class is July 18,19 with 16 hrs. CE and you can contact Brandon Harshe 214-422-1867 or bharshe@parkercc.edu for registration. Make sure you wear a NY Giant jersey as Todd is a big Dallas Cowboy fan and has been getting a little ‘uppity” lately!
Speaking of seminars, Dr. Rob Kessinger has a KCUCS Adjusting seminar coming in Davenport, Iowa July 24,25 (see attachment) The Isle of Capri is the name of the hotel and attached gambling boat where he will be holding this seminar. I wonder if they all use clockwise torque if the boat will rotate in the water???
Speaking of Knee Chest technique, anybody have a spare table for sale? Dr. Nick Tedder is looking for one:Can you put in your next newsletter that I am looking to purchase a used knee chest table; Kale or KCUCS! My contact info is:

Last week I’d mentioned the DACBR’s (chiro radiologists) got their “no analytical x-rays” policy published, which it the antithesis of how an UC doc practices. Dr. Ian Bulow, UCHC in Pittsburgh, wrote me that he had a woman who wanted to start care but was concerned about x-ray exposure. Her brother-in-law is a rad tech. Here is what I wrote him:
Anyway, according to the ICA X-ray guidelines 2007 (primarily authored by Harrison of the Biophysics technique) states that a standard set of cervical x-rays is on average 100 millirems (mrem) Acceptable exposure per year is 5000 mrems. You have digital, so your figures are probably lower. If you want the whole study check out www.pccrp.org To put that exposure amount in perspective, a coast to coast plane trip is 10 mrems.
Ok, now some good news. Dr. Jake Hollowell, Life West grad in my office who is perfecting his Sicilian in preparation for running the soon to be opened UCHC clinic in Sicily, told me about an interesting case of his. He spoke to a Fibromyalgia Support Group and the head of that group became a patient. About three months into care she has finally rid herself of all medication, is feeling fantastic due to the atlas corrections, and no longer wants to go to the group meetings because all they talk about is medication there. Anyway she went to Southern California to bid farewell to her father who is suffering from dementia and so many other health problems she felt her father would probably have to be placed in a nursing home or may be near the end of his life span. Her friends said she looked fantastic, so she decided to take her father to see Dr. Frank Conley in Canoga Park, CA. Frank attended many of Dr. Muncy’s seminars and is very exacting in his work. Get this—two weeks into care and the man’s dementia is 90% better!!!
Dr. Hollowell has another patient who was very reluctant to start UC care but did so to keep from having to sleep in the doghouse! At his wife’surging, he started care and the headaches quickly resolved. The man noticed that his persistently high blood pressure plummeted 30 points and has stayed normal. Seeing the cardiologist three to four times last month and rebuffing the doctors idea of taking the medication “even though he didn’t need it”, the man finally tossed the medication to the MD and said, “You take it!”
As we continue to hear about the Swine Flu, every now and then a scientist will put these “disasters” in perspective. Attached is an article from a newspaper, the Herald, in Australia sent to me by that super UC advocate Greg Buchanan. (YOU ALL SHOULD HAVE HIS - IS YOUR HEAD ON STRAIGHT? Could this be a silent epidemic? brochure in your office which has the site www.upcspine.com on it so your patients and perspective patients can get a very thorough explanation of UC and a referral directory for their friends and family located in other cities.)
I think most of us seasoned UC docs have all dreamed of having a multi-technique UC clinic, as nobody can be an expert at all the methods…jack of all trades, master of none! Dr. Drew Hall is the president of the Blair Society but took in an intern on the Life West Preceptor program who happens to practice knee chest. Debbie Benlien started her first patient and here is what Drew wrote:
debbies first patient
came from a screening and the lady has had wrist arthritis for 15 years……… to the point where she was grimacing in consultation holding her wrist the whole time headaches for 5 years , nervousness, and a whole host of other problems…….
Anyway she adjusted her axis knee chest and the lady came out of the rest area with a gigantic smile on her face…. Her headache was gone….
comes back second visit……….graph as straight as can be, no wrist pain…… headache better…. nervousness gone…and needless to say very happy……
Not bad for your first adjustment……….
Take care-
Tom
It’s Never Too Late For Upper Cervical Chiropractic

Now if I were over in Italy (technically, San Marino) I think I would probably would be sitting at an outdoor cafe sipping a cappuccino and observing sacro-iliac movements on the local females! Not Dr. Kevin Leach, nope…he is busy reading and studying and sent me the excerpts you will see below at the bottom of this e-mail from the new Lee Iacocca book. Great reading!!!
Not so great reading is a junk science article that Kevin sent me that I listed below about cold water causing heart attacks and reasoning that the Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea following their meals and the ‘temperature’ of the fluids play a major role in pathology of the cardiac system.. As our healthy fast foods infiltrate those countries, it will be interesting to see if a warm fluid or cold one is best to consume while downing that Big Mac!!!
While on the subject of suspicious studies, you may want to check the latest Dynamic Chiropractic and you will see the DACBR’s got their version of Chiropractic Radiology Standards published and accepted with the same old “red flag” rules. We were really pulling for the ICA version (www.pccrp.org ) I know we have rehashed this subject ad nauseum but HOW DO YOU KNOW THERE IS A SPINAL PATHOLOGY, ANOMALY, OR CONTRAINDICATION to adjusting unless you film the patient? Also, how do you know what direction that vital atlas has displaced? Guess I’ll sell my x-ray unit and buy some lucky dice!!!
Now a nice study was published in JMPT March/April 2009 Vol. 32, Issue 3 titled Interexaminer Reliability of a Leg-Length Analysis Among Novice and Experienced Practitioners Holt, Russell, et al. This study was performed at the New Zealand Chiropractic College with 50 participants ages 18-55. Tests were prone- legs straight and with knees flexed. They found “substantial agreement” and concluded: “This study revealed good interexaminer reliability of all aspects of leg length analysis protocol used in the study.”
Those of you who are insured by NCMIC, should check out the latest issue (Summer 2009) as you will find the “red flags enforcement” which deals with credit card fraud in medical offices and our need to be compliant by 8-1-09 check out www.nbac.com for the info. In the same issue there is an interesting case of a step-mother suing her DC stepson for malpractice. OUCH. Their conclusion, don’t take shortcuts with anyone…fellow DCs, next door neighbor, family…Hey, I made my mom sign an informed consent!!!
This past Monday things were a bit busy as both the waiting rooms were filled, the consultation room was packed, and two patients were waiting on the front porch. (Hey, free chicken dinners packs the office every time!) Dr. Cox brought back an egg with writing on it and said someone wanted to see me. The writing said ASRA, don’t break me!, so I knew it wasn’t the local MD! Turned out Dr. B.J. Kale and his young clinic director Dr. Tron Malachowski stopped by as they were later going to meet local Pleasanton resident, Dr. Shawn Dill for dinner. Great seeing both talented UC docs. I did call the restaurant and told them to remove the chairs so these knee chest docs would have to kneel while they dined!!!
One of the top UC researchers and instructors we have in the profession is Dr. Robert Brooks. I’m forwarding what he sent me regarding what is happening in NUCCA news: The recent edition of the NUCCA News electronic newsletter (sent to more than 600 chiropractors) recently broke news of the Council on Upper Cervical Care and gave a call for membership in the council. If you haven’t seen the NUCCA News you may wish to access it online at <http://www.nucca.org/newsletter/index.php> The Upper Cervical Research Foundation is devoted to developing and facilitating comprehensive research to investigate the relationship between the biomechanical and neurological balance of the upper cervical spine and its profound effect on human health and well being.
The new patient we saw Tuesday afternoon came in with an interesting problem, for the past six months every time he would drink wine or beer, he’d get a sharp headache pain spreading from the right C-1 region to the right eye. I call it the “Homer Simpson Syndrome.” Anyway pre adjustment his blood pressure was 175/112 (we checked it twice) and immediately post adjustment 144/95. Guess that Dickholtz guy knows what he’s talking about!!!
Those of you who didn’t sleep through my Upper Cervical Evolution talk (both of you!) may recall that I wrapped up the talk showing you the “world’s oldest subluxation” as I showed pics and told the story of a man whose chest was run over by a car at age three. Photos of him from age 5, through the army in WWII, until recently showed this 80 y/o man with a massive tilted pelvis…and probably a 77 y/o subluxation. I’ve attached a letter and photo he sent me yesterday and it is nice to see that…it is never too late for Upper Cervical!!!
The strange thing about practicing Upper Cervical is that you get the most interesting cases one after another (as mentioned below at the Liboiron chiropractic clinic in Texas.) Last week we had a consultation with a 24 y/o man who has been diagnosed with MS and has been legally blind as a result of the condition for 6 years…all following a head trauma. Today we had a man from Afghanistan whose son developed a very high fever at two months and is now at age 13 in a wheelchair, legs curled in, arms tonicallly contracted, cannot speak, cannot crawl or walk, and according to the local Children’s Hospital the MRI shows a film/membrane over the brain inhibiting its capacity to fire. Life gets more curious every day in an Upper Cervical clinic! I would implore all precision oriented chiropractic students to seriously look at being a UC specialist and Rock the World with miracles every day!!!
Last week I wrapped up my e-mail by forwarding an amazing series of events in Dr. Tabetha and Gerard Liboiron’s Round Rock, Tx clinic which started with the son of an MD who was going to be booted out of the army due to severe arm pain (resolved with UC care) only to have that man refer his wife, who had miscarried 3X, in for care. She is now 26 weeks pregnant,… Anyway the local news picked up the story regarding Menieres and sight recovery cases under their UC care and did a brief TV spot on the subject. Here it is:http://ww2.kwtx.com/global/video/flash/popupplayer.asp?clipId1=3834565&at1=News&vt1=v&h1=On+your+Side:+Upper+Cervical+Care&d1=127233&redirUrl=www.kwtx.com&activePane=info&
Disregard the thoracic manipulation in the video, Gerard informed me that he slipped, fell forward, put his arms out to catch himself, and his hands just accidentally landed on T-5 (ha ha)
GOLDEN HEART AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Upper Cervical Oriented Director of Oklahaven, Dr. Bobby Doscher.
Oklahoma City, OK – “Oklahaven” Children’s Chiropractic Center is proud to announce the winners of the “Golden Heart” Awards. Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Missouri and Fisher Chiropractic Center in Miami, Florida were the top participants in the 10th Annual Have-A-Heart Campaign. This worldwide event is held every February during Valentine’s Week to benefit “Oklahaven” and to increase the awareness of the healing power of chiropractic for the children.“I thank the chiropractic profession who has enabled us to continue our mission of restoring health to children and to spread the message of hope to searching parents. With everyone’s help, we are making a real difference in the lives of children throughout the world,” says Dr. Bobby Doscher, Director and C.E.O of “Oklahaven” Children’s Chiropractic Center.
Dr. Patrick Newhouse sent me a recent article on vaccinations the stats are pretty appalling. Check this out:
1. A doubling of learning disabilities, ADHD, and asthma.
2. A tripling of diabetes.
3. A 200% to 7,000% increase in autism in every state.
4. In 1970, autism affected four in 10,000 American children. Now it’s
5. In 1979, two-million children suffered from asthma. Today the
7. In 1997, ADHD was reported to effect 1.6 million American
8. From 1945-1969, juvenile diabetes (Type 1) afflicted one in every
9. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis was so rare they didn’t even keep
Wanna see another great video promoting UC care? Check out:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twjfd7UHqLY and you will see a very concised explanation of Upper Cervical. Nice to know, according to the A.M.A., that we are “JUST AS EFFECTIVE AS MASSAGE!!!”
OK docs, I know you are all tired of my lame jokes and exhausting diatribes, but a lot of the chiro colleges spam filters block my weekly e-mails (everybody’s a critic!) when they are sent to the students. Therefore, those who aren’t on my list or their e-mails are getting blocked can now get the UC info by checking out Dr. Paul Hambrick’s site:Now, I’m proud to announce to you that starting today, you can read his weekly emails by going to http://www.uppercervicaldocs.com/blog/category/upper-cervical-forest/ I know to most of you this announcement is like getting a root canal, but I really do appreciate Dr. Hambricks efforts and maybe, just maybe we can get some of those full spine docs who are just seeing backache cases to read about the amazing things happening in the upper cervical world. Spread the word!!!
Greg Buchanan sent me a letter “supposedly” written by President Barack Obama on his policy regarding chiropractic. I’ve attached it so you can check it out. I expect to see a toggle table in the Green Room in no time!!!
If you wonder where Blair Society prez and raconteur Dr. Drew Hall has been, he has been working super long hours in his LA practice and turning Hollywood on to UC. One of his patients is a young star of a very popular TV series and 80% of her lupus symptoms have resolved. She is very excited about her new life. Recently Drew has provided care for an executive (second in command) of one of the largest movie companies, game show executive, … Today a movie and TV actress who has dozens of films to her credit will be starting care. Oddly enough, Drew still cusses like a sailor and they seem to love his candor!!!
When we talk to our patients about the three causes of subluxations —Thots, Toxins, & Trauma, it seems like we see vivid examples every day. Had a patient who has been under UC care for 10 years call today explaining that he dumped his mountain bike this weekend,–fractured his jaw, fractured his orbital bone, got a concussion…and still wondered why he needed to be re-x-rayed by us! Physical Trauma to the max! Next is an example of Emotional trauma! Had a patient come in this a.m. with a beautiful scan (almost) which was all green on the left and lower right but 3 huge red bars on the upper right (she is an ASR-but as you know, side of inflammation has little to do with patient’s listing.) Anyway, she stated that she was doing great, but during a school counseling session regarding her son last Friday she could actually feel her atlas subluxate as she was getting the news of her son’s less-than-stellar academic accomplishments!!!
